We offer tusks, chunks and pieces of ancient ivory from the long extinct elephants. This ivory from Alaska is at least 10,000 years old and could just as easily be 50,000 years old. It is only slightly harder than fresh elephant ivory and usually has a tan or light brown coloration. The outside bark is sometimes very colorful as it was in direct contact with minerals in the soil and the elements. All of this material is good for display, some is good for scrimshaw, carving or slab knife handle pieces. Click here for instructions on working with ivory. Finding chunks that are usable for solid knife handles is difficult at times. We recommend that you let us know your requirements/plans when you order so we can be sure you get a piece that suits your purposes. If you want a piece for display we can polish a "window" leaving a natural frame of unpolished weathered ivory around it. The results are spectacular and beautiful. The cost of polishing varies from $2 up depending on the size of the piece and the window. Several sample sizes are given just to help you figure a rough price for size/price that you require. Please call with your size and price range; we'll do our best selecting for you whether it's a $10 piece or a $10,000 tusk.
