HIPPO IVORY

Hippo ivory is finally back in stock after being unavailable for over two years, great for scrimshaw, knife handles and carving. We have no lower curves or lower straights at this time as good quality uncracked tusks are just not available. If you give us your phone number we can put you on the call list if that changes. Hippo ivory is getting very scarce and the price has gone up sharply, we don't know if we will be able to restock so we recommend getting some while you can.

Hippos are dangerous animals and a serious problem in many parts of Africa, and account for more human deaths per year than crocodiles and poisonous snakes combined. Populations are frequently thinned out through government culling operations. The meat, hides, and ivory are all kept and utilized.

Contrary to popular belief hippo tusks are ivory. A variety of shapes and sizes, some have a tough enamel which is so hard it will spark on a bandsaw blade and ruin it in seconds. Click here for instructions on working with ivory. We can polish a window on any of these for scrimshaw or display. The sizes/prices below are examples and vary, they are sold by weight. Weights vary so order by size or price according to your needs.

HIPPO TUSKS - "CURVED PEGS"
I like to think of these as African whale teeth. They are excellent for knife or cane handles, carving into eagle heads or scrimshaw. They have short hollows, no enamel or a very narrow strip across the top, are generally round on the cross cut and are not prone to cracking. We can polish a window in these for scrimshaw and if they have the odd tip they can be reshaped to a rounded point. We have not offered these on the website before as we could never get enough of them to list and...we only have a few now.
(A) 3/4" diameter x 3-1/2" long around the curve - $20.00
(B) 1" diameter x 5" long - $38.00

(F) 1-1/4" diameter x 8" long - $125.00
(G) 1-3/8" diameter x 9" long - $145.00

HIPPO TUSKS - "STRAIGHT PEGS"
These are fairly straight with a short hollow, very little or no enamel, not prone to cracking and are round to rectangular on the cross cut. Good for knife handles, scrimshaw or carving. Again we have never had these on the web site due to lack of availability. We can polish and reshape tips where needed.
(A) 3/4" x 4" long - $25.00
(B) 1" diameter x 5" long - $45.00
(C) 1" diameter x 6" long - $75.00
(D) 1-1/4" diameter x 6-1/2" long - $85.00
(E) 1" diameter x 7" long - $125.00

HIPPO TUSKS - "UPPER CURVED" These rarely crack, have small hollows, enamel on the back and inside curve with an enamel-less area perfect for horizontal scrimshaw scenes. Slightly curved, self standing like a bridge, there is a crease or valley that runs along the inside of the curve the full length. The naturally beveled tip can be reshaped into a rounded tip and we can polish a window for scrimshaw. Sale "upper curved tusks" 30% off listed prices!
