Extinct Steller's Sea Cow Rib Bone 04

Description

Steller's Sea Cow Rib Bone pre 1772 from the extinct sea mammal.  This is the densest marine mammal rib bone and is favored by knife makers, pen makers, carvers and hook makers.  Any porosity can be filled with CA glue or thin tinted or clear epoxy or stabilized to increase the density.  This bone takes a real nice shine after sanding.

This piece is solid and heavy,  with nice brown color, length is about 24" around the curve and diameter at the cut end is 1 3/4".

Excavated from ancient Yupik Eskimo villages Kukuluk (coo coo' look) and traditional hunting camp sites (dating up to 6,000 years old) on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea.  Steller's Sea Cow were “discovered” by Georg Steller in 1741 in the Bering Sea and were extinct by the 1770's.
