Scrimshawed Walrus Skull Mask05a

Description

Scrimshawed Walrus Skull Mask nose plate with beautifully scrimshaw of osprey, polar bear, fox, snow shoe hare, ermine, grizzly, and ground squirrel on one tusk.  The other tusk has a mountain goat, bear cub, ptarmagin, fisher, grizzly, and wolf.  This is an exceptional art piece, the animals look really good. The
tusks are 21” long with overall height of this piece at 28”, it weighs 16 pounds 5 ounces.  Subsistance hunted, eaten, prepared and scrimshawed by Alaska native Yupik St Lawrence islander Jerry Wongitillin in the late 1900’s. Easily worth $5000, priced at just $2,495

All the walrus masks we sell are from the 1900’s and are being reintroduced into the market, they are decades old, always purchased in the lower 48 from previous owners. We do not buy any of these in Alaska where they are still being hunted for food. Some of ours are pre 1972 and others have native Alaskan scrimshaw, both are legal to buy and sell. No one is hunting walrus to supply us with these; they are all “recycled”.
