Eskimo Scrimshawed Walrus Mask 03
ESKIMO SCRIMSHAWED WALRUS MASK this nice bull walrus mask was taken in the 1980’s and has nice Alaskan native etchings of an eagle head, a killer whale, and a harpoon scrimshawed on the outside of the left tusk and a scene with a surfaced bowhead whale on the inside of the tusk. Scrimshawed on the outside of the left tusk isis the head of an eagle feeding it’s chick, then a scene with a swimming seal and below that is little bowhead whale. Along the inside of that tusk is a nice scene with a native hunter in a kayak with a bunch of floating ice and 2 walrus. The tusks are 21” exposed and the mask is 27” top to bottom and weighs 22 pounds, and has the ivory teeth in the palate. This is a unique native art piece, priced at only-$2,400
All the walrus masks we sell are from the 1900’s and are being reintroduced into the market, they are decades old, always purchased in the lower 48 from previous owners. We do not buy any of these in Alaska where they are still being hunted for food. Some of ours are pre 1972 and others have native Alaskan scrimshaw, both are legal to buy and sell. No one is hunting walrus to supply us with these; they are all “recycled”.
