Fossil Walrus Scrimshawed Pictograph Artifact 03

Scrimshaw engraved excavated ivory has eskimo style pictograph figures of caribou hunters and netting fish. This walrus ivory piece is a shard from what look like a scraping tool. 2 1/2” long with lovely color.

This fascinating Eskimo art predating the influences of the Yankee whalers arrival in the Arctic in the mid 1800's. Rich depictions of hunting, fishing, shamanistic ceremonies and village scenes. Although primitive in form this fascinating early stick figure artwork is extremely powerful and has a universal appeal. This pictograph artwork has been hand engraved in the old style on a genuine 500-3000 year old walrus ivory Eskimo Artifact piece excavated on St Lawrence Island. It was unearthed by a descendant of the primitive Eskimos that made it.
