Fossil Walrus Scrimshawed Picto Artifact

Description

This fascinating Eskimo art predating the influences of the Yankee whalers arrival in the Arctic in the mid 1800's. Rich depictions of hunting, fishing, shamanistic ceremonies and village scenes. Although primitive in form this fascinating early stick figure artwork is extremely powerful and has a universal appeal. This pictograph artwork has been hand engraved in the old style on a genuine 500-3000 year old walrus ivory Eskimo Artifact excavated on St Lawrence Island. It was unearthed by a descendant of the primitive Eskimos that made it. 2 5/16" x 1"- a whimsical picto piece, the school of fish swimming underneath the fishing net is delightful. There is scrimshaw on 2 sides of the piece ( the top rolls over with a whale on the other side) This piece has a great feel in the hand - $65
