WALRUS MASK SCRIMSHAW a huge and magnificent bull walrus mask/nose plate with 26" tusks, over all length is 36" and the weight is just under 31 pounds, the max girth is 9" at the bone line. This walrus mask has so much good artwork on it, simply amazing, the best I have seen in 45 years of business. The massive tusks are very nicely curved and both tusks have scrimshaw to represent a cribbage board track with a spade, club, diamond and heart. Both tusks also have a scrimshaw seal, and a carved seal near the tip. In addition one tusk has 6 very handsome walrus scrimshawed on the outside and a carved bear on the in side of the tusk, the other has 6 scrimshawed sea ducks including Spectacled Eiders and King Eiders and also a carved caribou on the inside. Signed by the artist on the back of the bone "Silook" a Siberian Yupik family name from St. Lawrence Island, it is 1980's vintage and a superb example of Native Alaska artwork. Hangs on a strong piece of walrus hide sinew, which was traditionally used for whale, seal and whale hunting before rope came up north. A one of a kind spectacular show piece-$7,500 includes shipping. We prefer a check but if you want to use a card feel free to.
All the walrus masks we sell are from the 1900’s and are being reintroduced into the market, they are decades old, always purchased in the lower 48 from previous owners. We do not buy any from Alaska where walrus are are still being hunted for food. No one is hunting walrus to supply us with these; they are all “recycled”.
