Excavated from the ancient Yupik Eskimo village Kukuluk (coo coo' look) and traditional hunting camp sites (dating up to 10,000 years old) on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea. From the west coast of the island the snow covered mountains of Siberia can be seen looming in the distance only 60 miles away.  Eskimo people known as Siberian Yupik have for over 5,000 years used ivory for their tools and utensils, it was easier to work than stone and wood is rare that far to the north.  Years of burial have given these intriguing ivory and bone pieces a deep rich color. These pieces were hidden from the world for centuries, when they were discarded in the village middens (dumps) along with tusks and bones of walrus, whales and seals. Only now are these ancient ivory and bone pieces being unearthed, excavated by the direct descendants of the older times Yupiks that worked it, leaving this treasure that became buried as a blessing for their great great grandchildren.

Excavated Walrus "Oosik" Penile Bone and Jaw Bone

Fossil Walrus Jewelry

This beautiful jewelry was handmade using prehistoric ivory and bone excavated in Alaska. For over 5,000 years Eskimos in the coastal villages along the Bering Sea fashioned sled runners, net weights, chopping tools and other utensils out of readily available ivory. That ivory became hidden from the world for centuries, when it was discarded in the village middens (dumps) along with tusks and bones of walrus, whales and seals. Only now is that ancient ivory being unearthed. Excavated by the descendants of the primitive Eskimos that worked it. Minerals absorbed from the surrounding soil have given the buried ivory beautiful natural tones of cream, brown, blue, red, green and black. A color enhancing process is used to achieve some of the more spectacular and rare colorations. Because this exquisite walrus ivory is thousand of years old, no animals were killed to collect it. Your purchase of this rare ivory helps support todays Alaskan Yupik Eskimos who earn a portion of their livelihood by digging for this precious organic gem material during the short summer thaw.

Hippo ivory is great for scrimshaw, knife handles and carving. Hippopotamus are dangerous animals and a serious problem in many parts of Africa, and account for more human deaths per year than crocodiles and poisonous snakes combined. Because of this populations are frequently thinned out through government culling operations. The meat, hides, and ivory are all kept and utilized, the hippo ivory we sell comes from Tanzanian government sanctioned culling operations.

Contrary to popular belief hippo tusks are ivory and come in a variety of shapes and sizes, some have a tough enamel which is so hard it will spark on a bandsaw blade and ruin it in seconds. We can polish a window on any of these for scrimshaw or display.

               Narwhal Items Added Regularly!

Narwhals, the mysterious unicorns of the sea, live in the Arctic Ocean and grow to about 18' (not including the tusk). The males grow an elongated tooth that spirals out clockwise to form a tusk reaching 9' in length. This ivory tusk has been attributed with the creation of the unicorn legends. The tusks have a small hollow that runs nearly the full length, the ivory has no grain or core like elephant, mammoth or walrus but looks more like sperm whale ivory with a pencil sized hollow. Narwhals have been a protected species since 1972 and importation is prohibited. We have a selection of old tusks for sale that were imported in the mid-1900s and are legal to sell anywhere in the U.S. (with the exception of New Jersey). These are extremely rare if you can find one. Now is your opportunity to own the rarest, most mysterious, unique and beautiful of the ivories and at a reasonable price. We can make a wood base of beautiful maple burl or you can stand it in a corner without a base or hang it on the wall. ( Available only if the tusk is purchased from us.) Scrimshaw Art

Generally acknowledged as the only original American art form, scrimshaw as we know it was born during the golden age of whaling during the 18th century. Whalers had an abundance of ivory teeth taken from the Sperm whale, which they hunted for its oil. The whalers also had an abundance of idle time on board ship and out of it developed an art form in which a jack knife, sharpened nail or canvas needle was used to scratch a design on the polished surface of an ivory whale's tooth. The most common subject matters included ships, whaling scenes, and the girl at home. The white scratched design was rubbed with lamp black, squid ink (sepia) or India ink; the ink was then wiped off and only the scratches held the ink this greatly contrasted with the white polished ivory.

From these crude beginnings scrimshaw has evolved into a fine art form with colored inks now being used and photographic quality work possible with the use of magnifiers. Scrimshaw on ivory is unique as an art form in that the artwork is done on a rare and inherently beautiful "canvas" that is itself appreciating in value!

Trade Beads Antique & Vintage

Most of these beautiful glass beads were used in the fur trade with the American Indians originated in the glass factories of Murano, Venice. The same beads were traded in Africa, Asia, S. America and around the world for gold, ivory, tea, opium, etc.

Beads have been made for thousands of years, they were originally hung on a cord to count prayers and gradually became a symbol of prayers. The word "bead" is actually derived from the Middle English word "bede", meaning prayer. Beads were used by the ancient Egyptians as decorations and as prayers when they were put on their mummies and mummy cases. They have been found in burials of many cultures: American Indian, Saxon and the Roman catacombs to name just a few. Most of the beautiful glass beads that were used in the fur trade with the American Indians originated in the glass factories of Murano, Venice.

NOTE: Often bead strands will have a few beads of another type mixed in. Most collectors take strands apart to restring and view a slight mix as a bonus, getting some different beads without buying a different strand. Some choice/rare beads are found on mixed strands. If you need unmixed strands please let us know when you order so we can check stock.

Represented here is verified pre-1972 white walrus ivory, dug up brown "fossil" ivory and Alaska native scrimshawed or carved ivory all of which is exempt from the 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act regulations.   The excavated ivory we have is from the ancient Yupik Eskimo village Kukuluk (coo coo' look) and traditional hunting camp sites (dating up to 10,000 years old) on St. Walrus Masks

Walrus masks and skulls, all legal.

All walrus masks and skulls we sell with artwork are from the 1980's (or older) and masks without artwork are from before 1972 and are always purchased in the lower 48 from previous owners. We do not buy any of these in Alaska where walrus are still being hunted for food only by Alaskan natives and that ivory is still legally being carved and sold. No one is hunting walrus this century to supply us with these, they are all vintage and “recycled”.

To comply with state laws we no longer ship any ivory to New Jersey addresses.

Wild Boar Tusks

Clean and nicely curved these ivory tusks are great for scrimshaw, letter openers or jewelry (measured around the outside curve).  These tusks are very hollow with thin walls, not the type that are solid and suitable for cutting or carving.  Filling with melted wax or epoxy will help protect them from cracking with age.  Photos are representative.
